About a month and a half ago a guest posts by Ken Muise focused on setting reachable goals. He made that point that you have to have a challenge that is difficult yet doable. And, it has to be something that your really want or need. Setting reachable goals is one key factor in getting results, it’s going to help you maintain focus while giving you a reason to push yourself harder. But if you have a reachable goal, and your just not seeing the results you want, what else should you keep in mind?

Have fun with it! Some people love going to the gym, others despise it. Same thing goes with running, biking, swimming, and almost any other activity, some people love it others simply don’t. In order to make getting fit more fun it’s important to find a sport or exercise that intrigues you, whether that’s by trying something new that you’ve always wondered about or continuing with your routine. For example, I rarely go to the gym because I don’t want to spend the money on a membership, but when I got a free week at a gym down the block I was there every day for several hours, it was great. I’ve also been using a TRX recently (a suspension system) to do bodyweight exercises and it’s been difficult yet enjoyable. There have been even smaller things that have made me look forwards to working out. When I discovered the knee-to-elbow plank I was thrilled, although I had to take a break when my elbows got bad carpet burn.

Changing up a routine, discovering new exercises or workouts, is what makes exercising fun. It’s also keeps you from plateauing since you will be inevitably changing which muscles you’re using. Now if you’re a marathon junkie, or just want to keep adding weight to your squats or bench press that’s great as well. Although I do think being fit is a combination of strength, flexibility and endurance, if you’ve found something that gets your heart rate up and keeps you happy, go for it!
